Research and development is a problem solving process that prepares products and systems for the marketplace. It is used to develop new products or dicover new scientific and/or technicl knowledge. The design/devopment is driven by the need of the consumer. It is heavily influenced by research and their prfit motive. When researcher and development is used to develop new products, it is carried out by engineers, But when it is used for the discovery of new scientific of technical knowledge it is carried out by engineers. But when it is used for the discovery of new scientific or technical knowledge it is carried out by industrial scientists. While research and development has only two purposes, it is vital for the comapny's success. The process of reasearch and development it to; (1) develop a problem statement: (2) design a process to collect information: (3) conduct research study: (4) Analyze the data: (5) make reccomendations for improvement.  There are two types of research, exploratory and coclusive, but all research should be ststematic, relevant, and controlled. There are also two categories for research design. They are nonexperimental and eperimental. but in both cases research design is the process of conducting a research study and analyzing the data for a specific purpose. All in all, research and development is used to prepare new products and systems for the marketplace.
